Music 7 - The Story Of His Master's Voice Poem by Geeta Radhakrishna Menon

Music 7 - The Story Of His Master's Voice

Rating: 4.7

Some stories melt your heart,
And this story of a dog melted
My tender, musical heart!

The famed classical musician -
Ustad Abdul Karim Khan had a pet dog.
Whenever he began his music practice,
The dog would come running,
Sit quietly, without a sniff or a bark,
Listening to his master's music,
In absolute silence,
In rapt attention!

When Ustad Abdul Karim sang
With high notes of musical variations,
And halted to conclude his musical session,
The dog would shed tears.
The dog was no ordinary animal,
The dog had exceptional ears for music,
A heart that flowed with music,
A soul embalmed with sweet musical notes.

The news of Ustad's music and
His exceptional audience- A dog,
Spread all along the neighbourhood
And the musical community.
The head of Gramophone company,
Heard of this amazing true story too.
They invited Ustad Abdul Karim Khan
To record a song for them.

When Ustad's music was played for the first time
On the Gramophone record,
The dog recognising his master's voice,
Came running and sat before the Gramophone.
He sat close with his head very near the loudspeaker
And sat listening intently.
This moment was captured by a photographer
In the quiet presence of all who witnessed this event.

The Gramophone company named their company
As "His Master's Voice"!
The much admired photo of this adorable dog
Listening to the Record music,
Established itself as their famed logo!
An inspiring story
That will be remembered by all musicians
And all dog lovers of this world.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This is a poem inspired by a video that I watched this morning, with much emotion, sent to me by my good friend, Shireen from London.
This true story was narrated by Nasir Khan in Hindi, with a beautiful voice in the video.
I could not resist writing a poem on this true story of the famed Gramophone company known as HMV and the reason behind their logo of a dog listening to the music.
Just goes to show that music is universal. It is not only the human beings but the animals too, are enchanted by good music.

During my childhood and my boyhood, when there were no TV and smart phones I used to listen music on HMV records. I always watched this dog but I never knew the story behind it. I am thankful to Dr. Menon who let me known this wonderful love story.

Ma'am this is just beautiful. Indeed music reverbrated all over and makes everyone enjoy the blissful moment. Knowing the story of HMV was really explicit with such a loving and caring dog.

When Ustad's music was played for the first time On the Gramophone record, The dog recognising his master's voice, Came running and sat before the Gramophone. He sat close with his head very near the loudspeaker.....the sensitive mind of dog is well expressed here. Not only human beings but animals and birds also listen music and enjoy themselves. You have well executed this poem. Five stars.

A fantastic and heartwarming tribute to the dog, i suppose after 'A dog has died" by Pablo Neruda this is one of the best poems i have read on " A dog that is alive to praise his master.... Loved the way you wrote it. Beyond ratings....******

I have read this amazing poem based on the story about the logo of iconic music recording company known as 'His Master's Voice (HMV) '. I also agree with your observation that music can touch the heart of human beings and can affect animals and plants. Thanks for this marvelous piece of writing.
