I Thought Elvin - Poem by Barry Conway

I THOUGHT

I THOUGHT WITH YOU I WAS SAFE,
YOU HAD RESCUED ME,
FROM THE RAGING TORRENT,
OF MY OWN MIND.

HAND IN GLOVED HAND,
DOWN NARROW PATHS,
THAT WIDENED AS WE WALKED,
TALKED,
ABOUT THE FUTURE TOGETHER,
WHEREVER,
WE MAY BE IN THE EARLY DAYS
THE HAZE,
OF YOU BESIDE ME,
THEN I COULD BE ANYONE,
YOU WANTED ME TO BE.

TO BE ACCEPTED,
BY SOMEONE GREATER THAN YOU,
IS A CONFIDENCE,
THAT GIVES MEANING,
TO THE MIND.

EACH TIME,
YOU LOOKD AT ME,
FILLED MY EYES,
FILLED MY HEART,
WITH YOU.

BUT NOW,
MY HAND IS EMPTY!
I CAN NO LONGER,
WHISPER YOUR NAME,
OR FEEL YOUR HAIR,
BRUSH AGAINST MY FACE,
AS YOU KISSED ME.
NO LONGER,
WATCH YOUR GLIDING WALK,
STRAIGHT AND TALL,
SUPPLE AS WILLOW.
MARVEL AT THE INVINCIBILITY,
OF PURPOSE.

EACH PATH NOW IS A TRAP,
FOR YOU WALK EVERYWHERE,
IN ALL MY WAKING,
AND SLEEPING DREAMS,
WITHOUT LIGHT,
IN THE DARK DESTINATION,
OF TIME.

NOW YOUR GOLDEN MANE,
CARESSES ANOTHER,
AND WITH EACH ROAR OF YOUR NAME,
I REMAIN LOST IN THE TREES,
WHERE WE USED TO KISS,
SO FONDLY

Topic(s) of this poem: betrayal, gold, hair, life, lost love, relationships, trees
