Injured Party? - Poem by Andy Brookes

The trick is not to look back she said,
Surveying the devastation, it does no good.
Nor tearing wide long healed wounds.
Don't be sad it was nice while it lasted.

It's war out there on the field of Mars.
Conquest is my game she smiled and lifted an eyebrow cynically.
What's love got to do with it, the hunts the thing,
You're just collateral damage, caught in the blast.

I love you, she said and I want you but don't need you,
Let's part as friends for old times sake.
I smiled now in understanding, knowing my heart would mend,
Turning and limping away, just another casualty of love.
