Sniper Poem by Thomas Thompson

Sniper

November 27,2013

Sniper

I hit the ground as the shot rang out
And heard men scream SNIPER
Cries of MEDIC all around

I lay glued to the ground
Frantically scanning the dark tree line a few hundred meters away
For a tell tale sign a glint anything

To locate the sniper before the next shot came our way
When suddenly All Clear sounded unexpectedly
And heard the faint whop-whop of an incoming Dust-off

To evacuate the man who shot himself in the leg
While cleaning his.45
His ticket out from a Hell he could no long endure

Nearby men quiet
Anger in their eyes as they glared at the man
Who would not return their gaze

The Huey with the the red cross on it's nose
Soon lifted turned and flew away
With the man who could no longer cope with the fear of each day

Our nerves jangled
As we stood impassive withdrawn
Each wishing we were he

Tommy
