Gifts You Gave Me - Poem by michele d'arpe lyons

The further you go into your world
The harder it is for me to accept
What fate has given you
And I ask the question why...
Why does someone so good of heart
Have the burden of something so heartbreaking
I don't understand...maybe I just don't want to
I look at you and at times I only see a shell
The mother I remember is no longer there

Then there are times when you surprise me
And when I look at you I see your face alive
And the love you have shows in your eyes
And the smile that spreads across your face
When you look at me...and say I love you
I see nothing more..than my mother and I
And I hold onto that moment
For as long as you let me
Then lovingly put it away
With all the gifts you gave me
