Bharati Nayak

I Speak Not - Poem by Bharati Nayak

I speak not
As I feel
Speaking is not essential
Silence speaks for itself
Even eyes speak
Speak thousand words my quivering lips
Unsaid words travel million miles
Sun speaks
Moon speaks
Speaks the thunderstorm
When hearts meet
Mouth says no words
Only the closeness knows
How louder is the heart
When it beats
Beating the loudness of sea-roars.

Lovely poem and very true. Silence has its own language. Since I am a hindi poet too, your poem reminds me one of my couplet which goes: - khamoshi kee bhi hoti hai apni zubaan, honth hilte nahi, baat ho jaati hai. (from my book Sabrang) .....Thanks for visiting my page to read poem of the day 'Musing of an Autistic (Report) Reply

    Hi, Bharati!

I just read this and first thought of Psalm 19 from the Bible in response to sun speaks:

God's glory is on tour in the skies,
God-craft on exhibit across the horizon.
Madame Day holds classes every morning,
    Professor night lectures each evening.

    Their words aren't heard,
    their voices aren't recorded,
But their silence fills the earth:
    unspoken truth is spoken everywhere.

You have strong images in this poem. And the closing lines strikes me as perfect.

Some other thoughts in connection with this. More typically women complain that men don't communicate, don't speak enough. But I've had my wife say to me, and I think this also is more typical of women, that I should have known what she wanted though she didn't say so. This brings to mind the idea that men are from Mars, women from Venus.

    Thank you for your poem.

What a wonderful comment you have made on this poem.It is wonderful because you brought to my knowledge the beauty and wisdom of Psalm19 of the Bible. The Scriptures of different religions contain the truth and human values. If only we could go deep and understand their meanings we would be better human beings.

A profound work of art on the communication of silence. Silence is golden. Beautifully written. And spoken from the heart.

    For Bharati Nayak

    Speak not from
    But rather
    From the heart

    I speak not
A person who spends a lot of quiet and alone time can really relate to a piece like this. You wrote this like sometimes how I think. Sometimes, I just want total quiet. I can hear myself talk with out speaking. This moves quickly to my list of favorite poems. Keep writing for us! . (Report) Reply

    I speak Not
Wonderful Free verse poem. When unsaid words travel millions of miles, why we should move our tongue to blabber words. At the wink of eyes, kingdoms have fallen. When we connect our minds to internet, our past life is coming in a flash. The faces which inspired us some decades back come alive in the screen of our minds. Without speaking, so many epics are fleeting in our minds. Wonderful! (Report) Reply

Thank you for your wonderful comment. In silence we speak to ourselves and also talk to others. This talk can be to people, past, present or future.

wonderful write yet so uplifting to mind that inspires to speak what is unspoken, as silence does express everything much deeper from within through eyes lips and body language, really heartfelt to say loudly when uniquely blended everything with an unequaled style and diction,10++, thanks for sharing.
