It Must End - Poem by Kelly Kurt

It must end, must it not?
This self-centered lust
This want, beyond need
This waste and this war
It is not in our genes
To hate and exploit
Haven’t we learned?
Empires fall
The most powerful still die
Happiness cannot be bought
Or stolen
Or wrested away
Or demanded
It has been long enough
Our intemperance
Our hubris
Our blindered pursuit
Shall be our shallow grave
Unmarked for all time
It must end, must it not?

I also hate war. A very heart felt poem.

Unfortunately, I don't believe these lines,
    'This waste and this war
It is not in our genes'
based on mankind's historic propensity for war I believe war is in mankind's genes; maybe someday the world will rise above greed, hatred, anger, distrust and many other sad traits deeply ingrained in human history. Until then, war will not end until mankind also ends and 'Shall be our shallow grave'

    Darla :)

I am not a geneticist but I think that, though many traits are hard-wired evolutionarily, many of the worst ones are byproducts of civilization and society, more so than genetically. In any case, it is the 21st century and we should start to grow up as a species and control ourselves. I want my children to have lives without dark clouds weighing their shadows down.
    Thanks for your comments, Darlene.

I wonder if it is in our genes power, lust, hatred and exploitation. Awesome poem Kelly. Enjoyed reading :) (Report) Reply

There is so much beauty, kindness, selflessness and good out there. Some, overt but most, in the shadows. It has always been the infamous 1% that corrupts the rest of the world.
Thank you, Simone, for your comments.

Yes, it must stop, but it won't,
    Man is an animal,
    That does not understand,
    The word don't!

    Impressive Masterpiece!
The whole truth about how we should be but aren't is found in this extraordinary poem.
Which is much more than a poem. This is an amazing summary of Man's inhumanity to Man
The abuse and this plundering for wealth and power at the terrible cost for others, this inhuman treatment of the weak and helpless.
Yes, I agree, it must stop, but will it ever?
This work should be a sign post in every home, in every heart.
    The best advise,
    To cure our vice.

I see the evil, but I still believe in the power of good, and see that too. (It's just not as popular to show on the news.) The beginning of the end starts with each individual.
Thank you for your heart lifting comments, Sandra.
