Pretend - Poem by Lynzi Berner

I smile, I laugh
I pretend
like nothings wrong

I am strong, solid
I don't fall apart
I hold those who do

I am the rock, the strength
I am not allowed
to feel sad

But in the dark hours
of the night
when all is still
and quiet

I silently scream

My pretend walls
and happy faces

As I am left with myself

The tears fall
but I don't wipe
them away

As the night fades
I fall asleep

Then I wake in the morning
My perfect smile
in place

Time to pretend
