The Forgotten - Poem by Kailyn Ortiz

I gaze at you
You stare at her
She looks off into the distance

I reach for your hand
Yours extends towards her
And she offers little resistance

You know what makes her smile, what makes her cry
You care about what she’s thinking
You don’t even know my middle name
Or why I started drinking

I see your happiness
The joy in your eyes when you’re with her
Like you were meant to be
But my heart is aching-
You’ve forgotten all about me

I can act like nothing is wrong
And ignore this sinking feeling
I can handle just being friends
After all, friends is better than nothing

But I am insignificant
Should the world be doomed tomorrow
It would be with her you would hide
I’d be left on the outside
Wallowing in my sorrow

I’m caught in a whirlwind of sadness
Sinking in this pit of despair
This pain is worse than dying
Because you don’t seem to care

I’m living a lie
I wish this story would have an ending
Cause I’m really not alright
I’ve only been pretending
