You - Poem by Rosemarie Diano

Walking down the path was never too difficult
After all I’ve got you to always keep me company
You, who would make me smile when I’m down in the dumps
You, who would try to keep me out of trouble when I’m feeling reckless
You, who would stand by me through ups and downs
You, who actually cared
Just you.

I’ve often wondered how life would be if I were someone else
Living another person’s life with other friends
Would I be happy? Would I be sad? Or would I be wallowing in misery?
As it was, I’ve come to realize how thankful I should be
To be living this life, my life, at this very moment
For otherwise, I’d be missing one of the best things in life that’s for free
I’d be missing you.

Unfortunately, things have a way of ending prematurely
I know that now though I had hoped in my heart the day would never come
But as it is, that day would and has already come
And as always it has come at the wrong time
We’ve reached a crossroad, one of the significant ones in life
You’re turning right and I left, stepping forward into the world
To see something new, feel something different
To do things we’ve never done nor experienced
And the sad thing is that I wouldn’t be doing it
With you.

Time flies by too fast it seems and I mean it, literally
All those times spent together, all the tears, all the laughter
They’re nothing more now than still frames in our memories
But people have a gift for remembering and I know I do too
So someday, when we’re all old and grey, I could look back
And smile and reminisce
And know that if I were ever given a chance to relive those moments
I’d do it again
With you.

And so life goes on and as it does, I would like to wish you a lot of things
I wish you the serenity of silence, the splendor of sunlight, the mysteries of darkness
The beauty of life and the love that lies at the roots of all things
I wish you all the things I would ever wish for myself
I wish you a friend
Just like you.
