Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I'm not cute or built to suit a fashion model's size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I'm telling lies.
...
You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may tread me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I'll rise.

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
...
Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly.
...
Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.

It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of ANNABEL LEE;
...
Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village, though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

The most important thing we've learned,
So far as children are concerned,
Is never, NEVER, NEVER let
Them near your television set -
...
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too:

Writing a poem is not about bringing some words together to create some charming sentences. It's so much deeper than that. Writing poetry is a bridge that allows people to express their feelings and make others live every single word they read. Poetry is to educate people, to lead them away from hate to love, from violence to mercy and pity. Writing poetry is to help this community better understand life and live it more passionately. PoemHunter.com contains an enormous number of famous poems from all over the world, by both classical and modern poets. You can read as many as you want, and also submit your own poems to share your writings with all our poets, members, and visitors.
If a person holds oneself dear,
let one watch oneself carefully.
The wise should be watchful
during at least one of the three watches.
Let each person first direct oneself to what is right;
then let one teach others; thus the wise will not suffer.
If a person makes oneself as one teaches others to be,
then being well-controlled, that one might guide others,
since self-control is difficult.
Self is the master of self;
who else could be the master?
With self well-controlled
a person finds a master such as few can find.
The wrong done by oneself, born of oneself,
produced by oneself, crushes the fool,
just as a diamond breaks even a precious stone.
The one whose vice is great brings oneself down
to that condition where one's enemy wishes one to be,
just as a creeper overpowers the entangled sala tree.
Bad actions and actions harmful to ourselves are easy to do;
what is beneficial and good, that is very difficult to do.
The fool who scorns the teaching of the saintly,
the noble, and the virtuous, and follows wrong ideas,
bears fruit to one's own destruction,
like the fruits of the katthaka reed.

When you're up against a trouble,
Meet it squarely, face to face;
Lift your chin and set your shoulders,
Plant your feet and take a brace.
When it's vain to try to dodge it,
Do the best that you can do;
You may fail, but you may conquer,
See it through!
Black may be the clouds about you
And your future may seem grim,
...
As empty as the future
So is a soaked page
Whose ink has run off.
I hope to be the author;
A new and boundless decade
Awaits my pen's touch.

Behold the might of Superman!
His powers prove supreme!
Such powers, Luthor hoped to ban
Yet Lex lived in a dream.

Footsteps fall on the riverside
Birds are singing like the days divine
Sun spills gold across the quiet stream
Wrapped in warmth like a summer dream

He sits alone, the evening still,
A quiet house on top of the hill.
The clock ticks on, the light turns gold.
He hums the song from days of old.

From the rest of the world,
Among the set of nations,
From the rest we are located in the west, the west of Africa,
An Africa far beyond the walls of war,

Dreams lay ‘neath the pillow at night
Downy soft and hid from sight
Ghostly whispers haunting sleep
Breathing secrets b‘tween the sheets

A burning begins to form in your chest,
An understanding that it isn't another year,
But one year less.

Stressed out with all the water drained
Craving for a sound sleep that keep the fatigue away
After a rough day of endless
pain

For many moons, the seasons sown
With butterflies and beasts of bone
And in the waning of the days
A final fall into the haze

No thanks my dear, I don't need the chill
Seems too much erosion has gone over the hill
I've broken the chains and I'm finding my way
Your price is too high and I'm unwilling to pay

He baits the hook, plans his sting
With twisted lines, and well tied strings
Oh, smooth as silk, a long cool drink
A fire burns deep beneath his wink

A legend whispers, soft and low,
Of life's last journey, where souls go.
A bridge of light, to skies so bright,
A path to Heaven, shining light.
...
Sweet whispers stolen in the night
No tranquil dreams; melodic flights
Sleep is hollow, the song is lost
As twilight turns the fire to frost

I dwell
In the absence
You left behind
...
If you die before me
I would jump down into your grave
and hug you so innocently
that angels will become jealous.

Indoors by technology, outdoors by speedy transport
I travel the world
Today in Japan, tomorrow in Rome,
Next day by an ancient civilization or in Hawaii or Coast Ivory,
...
The low lands call
I am tempted to answer
They are offering me a free dwelling
Without having to conquer

Beautiful is the 'thank you'
Wrapped with gratitude,
Offered to peace prone people
Who offer what is real-themselves

The Peace Warrior Of Mzansi, among heroes - a colossus!
Sun Of The Nation; a rare gift of Providence.
Once, entangled in the web of racist succubus;
Unruffled he declares before High Justice:

Love and lust are poles apart.
Lust is chaos, love is art.

On this dry prepared path walk heavy feet.
This is not "dinner music." This is a power structure.

"Come, pretty birds, present your lays,
And learn to chaunt a goddess praise;
Ye wood-nymphs, let your voices be

If you had the choice of two women to wed,
(Though of course the idea is quite absurd)
And the first from her heels to her dainty head
Was charming in every sense of the word:

A little while, a little while,
The weary task is put away,
And I can sing and I can smile,
Alike, while I have holiday.

Two thrown together
Who are not wont to wear
Life's flushest feather -
