All In Vain

Rating: 4.6
A passing crow forebodingly black
On a gravestone sat and loudly chacked
Lorded it over the peaceful site
Which belied the tales of death and fright
And pondered upon the rows of stone
What creatures would, such abode to own

A soldier killed in a foreign land
Long forgotten, buried in the sand
A life given afore it was due
A loved one lost without an adieu

(cont.) 3 - i'm sure both sides sometimes have some feelings of 'lack of success' after a battle, if no one side 'wins'. but at least no one 'loses' either. other times there is a winner and so the battle, though 'costly' in lives etc. may be said to be NOT in vain (for the winner) . i object to war, but i will not say that wars should never be fought. it MAY be worse to NOT fight, though i would want it to be my choice to fight or not. to MyPoemList bri :)

(cont.) 2 - i can't back it up with statistics, but i'll bet battles of 'modern times' are rarely fought (only) for glory, though some few may derive fame from their participation. and many battles are NOT in vain, at least not for a winning side. (cont.)

1 - hereabouts i'd call it a Raven, as in The Raven. i like some of the rhyming. to me, the first stanza does not have to lead to the 2nd & 3rd, unless perhaps it's a military cemetery. " Vain. This is an adjective which means 'not achieving the desired outcome', 'futile', 'unsuccessful', 'lacking substance or worth', 'hollow' and 'fruitless'." (cont.)

Wars are the greatest affront to our race....! How much of blood is shed to ascertain victory..... but all in vain! The victims of war and the soldiers who fought in the battlefield are soon forgotten and the progeny may not know for what and by whom the war was fought....! Loved ones are lost without even an adieu......! How true.....! I am touched by this write, Loke! A 10

We outnumber the warmongers. Unless that power is applied somehow; yes, the extinction of our species.

Nameless here for evermore... There is a slice of Poe in this raven-of-war, Loke. Masterfully done!

Long forgotten memory is buried in the sand. The battle hidden in books is unread. War always provokes thought and history of war brings sadness. This poem is amazingly drafted and shared...10

War is a futile effort to defeat the enemy, to win an enemy win his heart and make him a friend.

We, as a species have not learned from our mistakes. There are no winners in war.
