As Young As I Used To Be - Poem by Kelly Kurt

Carrying the large crate up seventeen stairs
I wheezed, grunted and quavered
Putting it down, I panted, swathed in sweat
There were six more left to move upstairs
Hands on my knees, I said “I’ll feel this tomorrow! ”
My concerned friend noticed my distress
Telling me to just take my time
He added, “You’re not as young as you used to be.”
I caught my breath, sat down, and thought out loud
“What a curious statement!
No one is ever as young as they used to be
Even a newborn.
I was younger, just seconds ago! ”
“True” he said, “but if you want to get any older
Stop acting like you’re younger.”

Your concerned friend had a point...He must have scared the bejesus out of you...Allow me to put a wee bit 'o positive spin on all this blarney...'The second you're born you're dying'.'We all have to die sometime' And if you should ever move to New Hampshire...You better Live Free or Die....Feeling better, Kelly...Knew you would...I'll bet you can't wait for the next crate and challenge fate by leaping the slate like you're twenty-eight! And BTW: This quilling was great! ~FjR~ (Report) Reply

My friend is 5 years older and has slightly more sense. I don't know if I just forget how old I am or if I consciously choose to try to prove I haven't lost all my youth. Either way, my neck hurts today.: -)

    1 person liked.
    1 person did not like.

Oh Dear! thats exactly how I feel. I keep telling 'the work i used to complete in 20 mts takes me 40 now. i wish i could go back to office and probably i would be better there.' but a small voice tells me will i be able to run to fax machine as quickly? will i be able to take the flight of stairs? or go for the elevator. So many questions. But whatever the physical stress, i like to be young at heart. I loved this. (Report) Reply

I know what you mean, Roop. I have been out of the loop for so long that many things have changed. But I will always be young at heart

I agree, Kelly. But you are talking about the physical aspect of being young or old. I may be wrong but in my opinion the older we get, the younger, the newer and more full of possibilities this world seems. At least for some of us, to a certain point in life, wouldn't you agree. Mentally and spiritually I hope we only grow 'younger' and wiser and not old and senile. In our hearts we will always be as young as we want to be. (Report) Reply

I agree, Ayman, but until you get near 60 years old, you don't know the limitations and pains that start to detract from the other aspects. I am as smart as I have ever been, know much more and am more creative, but the physical possibilities are stifling some of the joy of the mental ones

You make us know so many truths,
That send our thinking thru the roof
    And always in good poetry
There's something sage for us to see

Thank you, Kumarmani. He is a good friend that knows I refuse to act old, and he tries to save me from myself.

You have captured every old man's thoughts beautifully. I am already panting, fighting for breath, hands on my knees and darkness filling my eyes. (10) (Report) Reply

In many ways, my mind feels young. My body more than counteracts that feeling.: -)
    Thanks, Madathil
