Poem by Nic Custer

But we'll never be broke,
She said. Even when our
pockets are turned out
and wallet lies barren
because we are wealthy
in spirit. We have
stockpiles of pride
and chest full of hope.
And they will have to
build bigger jails to
our hearts or begin
taxing happiness
because we refuse
to play the fugitive
sending rich dreams
on the lam. We refuse
to be outlaw kings and
queens trying to bury
those shining treasures.
So wear your crown jewels
wild and free
because while we
may not have money,
you can bet
we will never
be broke.
