Community Service - Poem by A.j. Binash

I sat in my car
Outside the Goodwill

Playing with distorted shadows
Made by
The glare off the sun
Over the frost designs
On my window

I poured two…maybe four
Shots of brandy
Into my coffee

A swirl of steam
Twirled under my nose
The scent of alcohol
Provided the catalyst
To tolerate
The physical labor
I was about to endure

I walked inside
And the sad faces of the poor
Displayed through their
Wrinkled scowls

Stood before me
Wreaking of cigarettes

'This is your partner for the shift'
She pointed behind her
To a stocky
Twenty yr old
Who had diamond earrings
And a tattoo sleeve
Comprised of cliché
Tribal art
'He'll direct you on your duties'

Our duties
Was to lift boxes
From a truck
And move them
To a smaller room

The boxes were full of
Clothes, dishes, VHS tapes
And other
Suburbanites throw away
I mean
To make sure
They receive a tax break

As we performed
Our menial task
The only thing
Criminals have in common
Our charges

'So what'd you do? '
He asked

'Felony drug possession
What about you? '

He smiled
'When I was nineteen
I f***** a seventeen yr old'

I nodded my head

'Yeah her dad caught us
F****** in
Their basement
Bent over the couch'

He tripped
And a glass cup
Fell from his box
It shattered on the floor
With shifty eyes
He kicked the broken donation
A low hanging shelf

'Yeah judge gave me two years
That drug s*** though…
That's some heavy stuff'

I nodded again

'Yeah what kinda drug was it? '

He laughed

'Heroin man! Yeah did that once
Some dude snuck it into the cell
We slept good that week'

We laughed together

As we finished our duties
I reached the end
Of my

The previous nights drunk
Still inside my blood
I began to slur my words
This led to me

'Alright, pleasure to meet you
But I gotta go'

I stumbled out the front door
And into my car

Squinted as I drove a block

I awoke
Hours later
And ready
For another drink

Fabulous narrative style. This is really great. Reminds me of a quote I heard Alcohol was my first true love (Report) Reply
