Housework - Poem by Kelly Kurt

To some, the idea of cleaning is enjoyable
The expectation, exhilarating
Others dread the prospect, delay it
I am one of the latter
The kitchen needed scrubbing for weeks
The sinks were dull, counters cluttered
Floors were dusty and mottled
Cobwebs laced corners
Every tomorrow was the plan since last month
I don’t know how or why
But today was the day
It started slowly
As I made morning coffee, I subtly prepared
Broom and mop were disinterred and laid out
Cleansers and rags put in clear sight
On the third excursion into the kitchen
I started
Top to bottom, left to right
Less than two hours
Oh, it looks and smells nice!
It wasn’t backbreaking and didn’t take all day
I feel triumphant… Relieved
I am not looking forward to doing it again though

Great job, buddy. The fact that you feel triumphant is what counts. I know you will reply with something funny that will make me burst out in laughter. I am counting on it dear friend. A great write as always too. (Report) Reply

It is a short lived triumph. I spilled a large bowl of home made tomato sauce all over the counter, sink and floor. It was hot, and I leaped back, knocking over the full garbage can. The kitchen is in the basement and is only about 10% of the volume of the church. Only my room is messier. I will rest on my laurels for a while before cleaning it.: -)

Quite natural..... Yes, after long procrastination, the clean look of the kitchen got through moping and scrubbing is so exhilarating! You have every reason to feel proud! As a woman, I can easily relate to this write! Enjoyed much! A 10 (Report) Reply

Oh well, I never call my room dirty, I just call it 'arranged to my preferences for my creative needs' ;)

A very fine poem Kelly.. And yes, it is good idea to clean ONLY when things begin to look like a junkyard.. Before that, I guess, we can live with it... Thank you for sharing.. A really good poem that makes us all smile :)

I try to clean up after every little mess but, well, things still get out of control.: -)

Wow. The last line is the witty one to make the mood. I guess a poet's house becomes this dirty because he always keeps himself drowned into beautiful thoughts. Thank you. (Report) Reply

I try to clean up after each little mess and use very few cooking utensils etc.. and clean them immediately after use but things eventually need a thorough cleaning and I don't look forward to wasting my time doing that.: -)

I am COMPLETELY proud of you... Especially the way you wrote this.. It was a developing story with conflict, build up, and then a TRIUMPHANT success.... You disinterred your broom... That spoke volumes. When I saw the title of your poem, I couldn't wait to read it. I wrote a poem about cleaning my refrigerator... Maybe I should post it... Time to get to my housework! Thanks tons Clean Kelly... And you told me you don't dream big! :) (Report) Reply

Thanks, Pamela. Now my room is another story. Being in the basement (like the kitchen is too) it gets filthy very quick. Maybe the reason the kitchen didn't look as if it was that bad was because my room is a disaster. I do a monthly, full clean of the chapel, foyer, vestibule, bathrooms, stairways and basement and I keep the grounds meticulously, but for some reason, my living area is almost always dirty by just about anyone's standards. Yes, please post your refrigerator cleaning poem. It will probably inspire me, if not give me some tips.: -)

You did such a good job and so well spelled out,
    You may be getting calls.

I loved this poem, the whole scene, a short film to remember and learn from.

It has been my experience that women, especially those who are a generation ahead of me, do a far more thorough job and would criticize my effort. But it was my best effort

That is perhaps everyone's experience. But once we get down to doing the disliked work, we begin to enjoy it. And the sense of accomplishment at the end, when we relax stretching our limbs, is just great pleasure. Enjoyed your poem. (Report) Reply

There are some chores that I look forward to (Yard work for one) but the sense of accomplishment when done and done well is the same
