Kick In The Balls - Poem by B.. Alexander

So the other day
I was casually sitting in the pub garden
With some good friends, drinking
One way or another we ended up bragging
About how well we were doing, and how we're feeling
I'd only recently realised it, but right now
I've never actually been happier in my life
And when I told them they said
'We're pleased for you Thom
Knowing you as long as we have
That’s something special to you'

And when time was called
We went our separate ways
I came home and had a shower
In the sound of the water
I heard my words repeating
Rising in the steam...
'I've never been happier in my life'
And I have to say, I smiled
A real smile...

So you can imagine my anger today;
Casually lying in the bath recovering from last night
The scenes and dreams repeating in my hot head
When the slow dull ache that's been bugging me
I investigate its source to discover
It's not something I'd ever thought I'd find
Only something I'd trapped in jokes
I'd point and poke at other unknowns
A lump and a prospective sickness
Not knowing what you're supposed to do
I wondered, what am I going to do

And when time was called
I went my slow way home
Spoke to my girl on the phone
Tried to explain why I'm down
I heard my words repeating
Ringing in my ears...
'A lump and prospective sickness'
And I have to say, I cried
I really cried...
