Lessons - Poem by Casondra Thompson

Have you learnt your lesson
And have you learnt it well
All behind those few tiny lines
Are so many stories to tell
But focus while you can
On the stories so sad but true
Look at how your lives turned out
Leaving you lonely and blue
You’ve tossed your kids away
To four hard brick walls and floor
Knowing all the time
That you’ll sling dope some more
You wonder if its worth it
Thinking It’s the only way
Knowing in your heart of hearts
Only to make it day by day
One more line, one more snort
You think what could it hurt
Only to find yourself once more
In cuffs, lying face down in the dirt
So behind these bars of hell I ask
Have you learnt your lesson well
Because there ain’t nothing like doing time
In McCracken County Jail
