My Own Worst Enemy - Poem by Bryony Bratchell

I have to try
push push push
myself so hard
I hate to try
so easier not to

I have to focus
need to stay sane
won't let you change me
won't play your game

so used to being
within your control
this freedom will kill me
but I must,
must fight you

Can't let it get to me
your charm
Can't let it affect me
and seep into my veins
like poison
but why do I love it so?

I won't succumb
the sheer power of you
could make me fall to my knees
and you're in my mind now
taking over,
must not give in
I'll go crazy
with or without you

Tonight I'll fight this
I'll take three steps
you're staring back at me
there in my reflection
I have to be free of you
The person I don't want to be
The person you're making me
My own worst enemy

I'll resist
my inner demons
though you continue
to twist my mind
around and around

You tell me, it's my own fault
I made you
I hear you, but I don't listen
these little voices you created
within my mind

I have to focus
need to stay sane
won't let you change me
won't play your game

so used to being
within your control
this freedom will kill me
but I must,
must fight you

Sometimes,
my greatest achievements
are the things
I don't do
