Night Watcher - Poem by Andy Brookes

Hard by, death stands,
in draperies of midnight,
with cool star eyes
but I never catch him looking,
no that would be bad form,
but surly he is

is he nearer I wonder,
as cold breath on my cheek
wakes me in the coal black night.
a window left a jar I think
but is death just making sure.
sure of his quarry.

death stands hard by
one day we will shakes hands
become acquainted, maybe
even become friends.
