The Door - Poem by Fiona O'Connor

The door has been closed
For many years
For centuries
And all inside it
Cry
The dust weeps
The mice wail
And the Children
The children
Do not speak
They do not share
Their misery
With others, whose problems
Are just as bad
Their parents
Murmur amongst themselves
Aching for their children
Who shouldn’t have to hurt
This way

The ones outside the door
Ignore it
They have not
Forgotten what lies
Inside the door
But
They do not speak of it
And so
They go about their
Happy
Little lives.
The door
Remains closed
Even though
Every one
Outside the door
Has the power
To open it
