The Glass Floor - Poem by Barry Conway

THE GLASS FLOOR

THE ITALIAN DIRECTOR SLITHERED TOWARDS ME,
AFTER MY AUDITION.
HE WAS APPROACHING OBLIVION,
DRESSED IN A LONG BLACK CLOAK,
WITH A RED SATIN SHIRT,
AND MATCHING HANDKERCHIEFS.
HERALDING A HUGE GOLD PENDANT
WITH HIS SHAGGY BEARD AND OVERSTATED MOUSTACHE,
HE LOOKED LIKE AN AGEING HAIRY YETI,
WHO HAD BEEN TOO LONG ON THE SAUCE,
SMELLING OF WHISKY AND GARLIC,
HIS PERFECTLY FORMED FALSE TEETH.

"DE PARTS YOURS! "
HE SAID IN A GRUFF VOICE,
AS IF HE HAD AN OLIVE STUCK THERE.
"YOUA MAYA NOTA BEA ITALIANO,
BUTA NOBODYS PERFECTO! "

I WAS EXCITED, REALLY EXCITED,
THIS WAS A DEPARTURE,
FROM MY NORMAL FAILURES.
I HAD SUCCEEDED IN SUCCESS,
AND I FELT I HAD FINALLY ARRIVED,
FINALLY I HAD BROKEN THROUGH,
THE GLASS FLOOR,
I HAD DONE IT,
I HAD SECURED MY FIRST ACTING ROLE,

NOW I WOULD TAKE THE WORLD BY STORM,
MAKE WAY FOR THE MAN,
MAKE WAY FOR ME,
I WAS ON MY WAY AT LAST
I WAS DETERMINED TO BE THE BEST,
THE VERY BEST,
AND I WOULD MAKE THIS COMMERCIAL,
THIS PART,
FOR HEMORRHOID CREAM,
MY VERY OWN!

Topic(s) of this poem: acting, destiny, determination, humour, success
