The Like Of Brian - Poem by Damian Murphy
He was Ireland’s best ever number thirteen
Such talent as his is very rarely to be seen
A man who played the game with breath taking flair
Who embodied leadership, was the ultimate team player.
An instinctive awareness always evident in his play
superior knowledge and skills which made the opposition pay
absolutely exquisite skills in his ball handling
proving no soft touch either when it came to tackling
A man who never hesitated in putting his body on the line
Always proved so passionate, he never once stopped trying
He learned his trade in Blackrock and later at UCD
Made his debut for Leinster at the tender age of twenty
Winning his first senior cap for Ireland later the same year
the fact he was uniquely talented soon became abundantly clear.
A memorable hat trick against France gained him international renown
He then went on to captain Ireland when they won the Triple Crown
As well as leading Ireland to victory in the Six Nations Championship
After 61 years waiting we won the Grand Slam, under his stewardship
With Leinster he excelled while playing in the Heineken Cup
Where a record breaking thirty tries he managed to notch up
His total games for Ireland; a staggering one hundred and thirty three!
Making him the most capped player ever in rugby union history
He has captained Ireland on a total of eighty three occasions,
is one of only three players ever to get four Lions tour nominations.
Forty six international tries, the highest scorer ever in the Irish game
It is no wonder we fans came to love him, were always chanting his name
His twenty six tries in the Six Nations proves a record on it’s own
he is the highest scoring centre the game of rugby has ever known.
All were delighted to see his game improve with every passing year
As he earned the respect of opponents in whom he instilled a sense of fear
Unfortunately for Ireland Brian O Driscoll has scored his last try
But the win against France? No better way to say goodbye!
He won the respect of fans and opponents and his team mates
A true legend who’s earned the title of one of rugby’s greats
For of all the men that have ever chosen to answer Ireland’s call
You, Brian O Driscoll, stand head and shoulders above them all
For you left it all on the field, played with both heart and soul
You gave us your very best, your commitment absolutely whole
We the fans want to say thank you, every last woman and man,
All the very best to you and your family from every true rugby fan.
