284. - Poem by John Westlake

I am not made in the image of my parents
nor would I wish to be
am almost ashamed to admit
that I might have had
anything to do with either of them

I'm not my mother's little boy
despite what you may say
the fact that she may have given birth to me
doesn't mean a thing
she failed in her proper duty of protection
and in that way she is nothing more
than just a failure

I'm not my father's son
as he's a lying cheater
in my eyes that just makes him
NOTHING
the whole sum of what he left
is all that he is to me

I refuse to be a part of them
though it is true they are not together
their mistakes will be remembered by me
as sure as I have been forgotten by them

I am not made in the image of my parents
I will not make their mistakes
I hope that one day I can have a real family
one that I can truly be proud of
