Ignore My Demons - Poem by Lynzi Berner

Take my hand
lead me from
this unholy land
of my own creation
Ignore my demons
as they reach out
to bite and scratch
you are the enemy
for you are
the only one
who can pull me
from here
I want to leave
but then I am scared
as terrifying as
the nightmare is
the demons
they know me
and in their own way
they love me
like snakes
they are more afraid
of you
than you are
of them
they have
everything to lose
and you have
everything to gain
I'm asking you
to understand that
although I'm asking
for your help
do not grow angry
if it takes me
a minute to leave
anyone can get
used to something
given enough time
and presently
I am used to hell
and to leave here
is going to be
the hardest
and scariest thing
I have ever done

So let me
close my eyes
and hold on tight
when I wake up
the nightmare
will be over
