Modern Poetry. - Poem by Michael Walker
Open the doors to traditional forms,
which are not closed forms at all;
the ballad and the lyric are the well spring
of English poetry and the friend of music.
Open the doors to individualist poets,
who think deeply and sense like psychics;
they welcome free verse like a new friend,
but do not turn their backs on older meter.
Close the doors to those with closed minds,
who cannot see past open form as the present
and the future of poetry, ignoring the past.
Let all poets be free to write their own way.
