A Messy Table Poem by Ruth Walters

A Messy Table

The table was messy, dirty, and annoying.
I didn't want to clean the table
and the table didn't want to be cleaned.
The table and I stared at each other.

I began to think of the table as
‘The unmade bed', a beautiful work of art.
A book placed here,
a vase there, a note pad, finely balanced

on a tissue box.
There are two TV remote controls
and a glass coaster.
'Don't touch the coaster', the table barks,

"It protects my glass".
Aside the coaster is a biro,
a pen with a nib, clearly visible,
and under the table is a laptop.

I tell the table, "you're a work of art".
The table doesn't answer but I see a smile,
and it seems to take a bow.
The table and I understand each other now.

I make another cup of tea, three sugars,
invite the table to join me. The table laughs,
welcomes the teacup and the saucer,
and licks the drips from the spoon.

'biro'? ? ....'A biro is a brand name for a ballpoint pen, which is a writing utensil with a small metal ball at the tip that transfers ink to paper. The term 'biro' is used in British English, while 'ballpoint pen' is used in American English' Who knew? bri : )

There is a strategy in art that delves into our inner disarray and tries to make a compelling visual composition of it. Your poem does that in words, and in a satirical vein.
