Cost Of Hope - Poem by Seema Chowdhury

I ask myself everyday
And want to know today
What brightens my day
What lightens my way

For I feel life is slipping by
Anf troubles are flowing high
And the words of love and hope
Are lost and now I cannot cope

For the dreams that I've dreamt
And the words that I've meant
Are all losing its glory and charm
And I'm losing peace and calm

Please God help me to follow
The path of hope and swallow
The bitter bite and realities of life
So I can get back on hope's drive

And once again can bring back smile
And avail it for all for a while
And take a break from struggle and pain
And calculate the cost of hope and fain.

The poetess confesses that after all Man has to surrender before God: the Supreme Force. She is confused for she does not know how she should brighten her path of life, certainly it is Faith through which one can do so and in the modern age Man is loosing His faith in God. She is conscious of the fact that time is slipping away and she is also conscious of the fact that she could not do the role she wanted to perform; perhaps she had very high ideals. The world is out of her control everything goes against her will and on seeing all mess she is pained, certainly, being an intellectual leader she must be troubled on seeing the world becoming more and more a horrible place of troubles. Now she wants to face the bitter realities for she knows she had been in illusions, she kept her eyes close to realities that are bitter and difficult to swallow, only it is God Who might bestow her courage to face it all and she helplessly pleads to God, no doubt we are nothing without His Providence being with us. Language is simple the lines are rhymed and the poem bears a general appeal.
