Ringing Up - Poem by Karnail Singh Heirwale

RINGING UP
Those who can
Love
Those who cannot
Hate
Such is the burden
Of mystery
In which they dwell
You ask them
They cannot express
What for all that pother
They come forward
With a pretense
They want to impress
Others with their
So-called integrity
What a pleasure they take
In ringing up
One lover or another
For the sake of ringing up
Perhaps eroto-sadism
Isglued to their bones
They undo it for the moment
To have an open encounter with it
Again and again
The rose they shun
And grow a yew
The role is theirs
They cry aloud
'Thou art my foe.'
