Silent Search~ - Poem by Candie Saldana

The rain falls cold upon his back
as he bends over searching
his hands covered with gloves
worn thin and fingers showing
the water trickling down
beneath the old coat
with it's moth-eaten holes
people shuffling by, never seeing him
The grayness of empty hearts
like the decaying of rotting meat
watch how they move away
worried they are, worried they will catch it
and still his search goes on
not much he asks for
have we nothing to give?
The Italian shoes and leather costs
that hurry by almost running
The sweet smell of perfume that lingers
he smells his own sweat and softly apologizes
only a small amount would bring such joy
for a warm cot, a cup of hot coffee
or it is the devil's bottle that will bring
his salvation
silently he prays in the only voice he knows
and watches as the rain slowly fades
and the night approaches
for the search continues....
